Since Donald J. Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in the November election, the apoplectic Democratic Left has been grasping at every straw possible to explain the loss to its base, settling on a principle theme created out of whole cloth: The Trump campaign colluded with Russia to hack/steal the election.
The most recent iteration of this hoax was “reported” by The New York Times over the weekend and into Monday, with the paper alleging that Donald Trump Jr., and some of President Trump’s campaign staff had a meeting with a Russian lawyer for the sole purpose of receiving damaging information on Clinton that had been provided by the Russian government.
Boom: Instant collusion, right? Only, despite the breathless allegations, which have been picked up and echoed by the Trump-hating Left-wing Washington media 1) no damaging information was ever passed to Don Jr. — none — regardless of who promised it; 2) the Russian lawyer is telling a completely different story; and 3) there are no laws against meeting with foreign figures, especially since Don Jr. was never officially associated with his father’s campaign. (Related: Don Jr. Russia ‘scandal’ is perfect illustration of the stinking political swamp Trump must drain.)
To the unhinged Left, any campaign mining for opposition research using a foreign government is tantamount to treason — that is, as long as it’s the Trump campaign.
But what about the campaign of vanquished Democratic challenger Clinton? What about her and her husband’s nefarious dealings with Russia — and Ukraine, and Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, and dozens of other countries before and during her latest presidential bid?
To the Left there are no similarities, but remember, Left-wing Democrats lack the hypocrisy gene. There certainly are similarities, and I’m about to list them:
— The New York Times, back before its editorial staff and reporters became incapacitated with Trump Derangement Syndrome, reported that numerous monetary donations to the Clinton Family Foundation while Hillary was Obama’s secretary of state, and afterward, had become “an Achilles’ heel for her campaign and, if she is victorious, potentially her administration as well.”
Saudi Arabia was particularly generous, having donated between $10 million and $25 million to the foundation.
“The conflicts of interest are cast in stone, and it is something that the Clinton administration is going to have to grapple with,” Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch — which at the time had sued to obtain all documents from the Clinton Foundation relevant to foreign donations — told the Times. “It will cast a shadow over their policies.”
— The same NY Times published a thorough accounting of how cash flowed to the Clinton Foundation from Russian and other sources as Moscow sought to finalize a deal to obtain 20 percent of all strategic U.S. uranium reserves, a principle element in the development of nuclear power and weapons:
Beyond mines in Kazakhstan that are among the most lucrative in the world, the sale gave the Russians control of one-fifth of all uranium production capacity in the United States. Since uranium is considered a strategic asset, with implications for national security, the deal had to be approved by a committee composed of representatives from a number of United States government agencies. Among the agencies that eventually signed off was the State Department, then headed by Mr. Clinton’s wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton.
— During the campaign, the Clinton team and its allies actually colluded with Ukrainian government officials who wanted to see Hillary win, The Daily Caller reported. Citing an earlier report from Politico, the site noted:
A veteran DNC operative who previously worked in the Clinton White House, Alexandra Chalupa, worked with Ukrainian government officials and journalists from both Ukraine and America to dig up Russia-related opposition research on Trump and [one-time Trump campaign manager Paul] Manafort. She also shared her anti-Trump research with both the DNC and the Clinton campaign…
After Trump won, the Ukrainian government worked overtime to make amends with him for helping Clinton, Politico noted.
Opps.
There is much more evidence to suggest that the Clinton campaign was involved in actual nefariousness on a number of levels with foreign governments than Team Trump, and by a long shot. This “Trump-Russia collusion” narrative is simply bogus.
