In the days before POTUS Donald Trump was inaugurated, a plot to unveil to the public what would come to be known as the most important document in an unprecedented scheme to depose a duly-elected president was first introduced into the public realm.
On January 10, 2017, Buzzfeed published the entire contents of what was dubbed the “Russia dossier,” a collection of sometimes salacious but ultimately unverified claims and accusations assembled by a former British MI6 agent, Christopher Steele, that had actually made its rounds in Washington, D.C.’s media circles during the summer of 2016.
Because no news organization could verify what Steele had put in the dossier, other news organizations passed on its publication. But the day Buzzfeed News published it, CNN just happened to report that Deep State intelligence officials had briefed outgoing President Obama and incoming President-elect Trump about the existence of the dossier and its contents.
“I made the final decision to publish the dossier because I believed that the information reported in the CNN story made the Dossier itself, rather than the allegations therein, an important story,” BuzzFeed Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith wrote in a statement filed in federal court on behalf of the publication, which was being sued for libel by Russian figures mentioned in the dossier.
From there, news of the dossier spread to every other Washington establishment news organization because now, finally, it was ‘out in the open.’
But a reporter for another media organization, the far-Left Mother Jones, disclosed elements of the dossier months earlier, only then, most Americans were unaware there even was a “dossier” let alone who wrote it (Steele), who commissioned it (Fusion GPS) and who paid for it (the Hillary Clinton campaign).
According to a transcript of congressional testimony from former top FBI lawyer James Baker that was released last week by Rep. Doug Collins (R-Ga.), the dossier made its way into Baker’s hands via David Corn, a reporter for far-Left magazine Mother Jones in the fall of 2016, before the November election. Corn wrote a story for Mother Jones that was published on Oct. 31 in which he quoted Steele, though he did not mention him by name and did not reveal the more salacious aspects of the Russia dossier.
According to The Gateway Pundit, Corn would later say that he gave Baker the dossier after the election, but that doesn’t jibe with Baker’s testimony.
During Baker’s testimony, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) asked if he had talked to Corn about anything the FBI was investigating, and in particular the Steele dossier.
“I’m sorry, I’m going to cut — not let him answer these questions right now. You may or may not know, he’s been the subject of a leak investigation which is still — a criminal leak investigation that’s still active at the Justice Department,” Baker’s attorney said during the hearing.
Baker did say that Corn, his very good friend, was “anxious” to get the dossier into the hands of top FBI officials. However, when Jordan asked the FBI lawyer if Corn mentioned how he got a copy of the dossier, Baker said he “couldn’t recall,” but that there was a 302 filed of his interview with the bureau.
There was more back-and-forth, but the fact was established in congressional testimony that another media source and another reporter published aspects of the dossier without ever having verified any of it.
And as it turned out:
— None of it was true.
— It was bought-and-paid-for opposition research for a rival political campaign.
— It was used to justify obtaining FISA warrants to spy on the Trump campaign — unprecedented in our county’s history.
POTUS Trump is right when he says that the establishment media is an “enemy of the people.”
